Ghost 14 seems easy to die on windows XP or vista. And the bulk of solutions on the web dont seem to always work. After days of fixing mine here is how I fix Ghost 14
The problem with ghost 14 it can detect a drive problem and not tell you which partition or drive in a friendly error message you have to dive into system logs, events and some trial and error to resolve the problem on pc. It can give crash messages and die ungracefully at boot up.
if you get any of these errors in event viewer related to ghost 14 these are the fixes I have found to resolve them.
Errors in event manager system and applications section and solutions that worked for me.
1) "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation."
Solution: Was a corrupted pagefile. So I delete any set on any partition. I had one on C: an one on S: partitions. however for some reason the 3gb swapfile on S: wasnt referenced any more. Delete all. reboot. The recreated them and reboot.
also a chkdsk /f /r c: and s: would make sense.. check them for any errors via scandisk and partition software.
Ghost 14 will give an error about unable to reconcile changes with this fault.
also if click status if open it. it give a long error about unable to read ComputerGroupPolicy - addpagefileinfo computer.cpp which should be reported in event log as well.
2) Event Type: Error
Event Source: Norton Ghost
Event Category: High Priority
Event ID: 100
Date: 1/26/2009
Time: 7:02:16 PM
User: N/A
Computer: PSS-LAPTOP
Description:
Error EC8F1780: Cannot successfully reconcile changes since last session. Error EC8F1771: Cannot enumerate the current drives on this system. Error EBAB0013: A test that safeguards the integrity of the program failed unexpectedly. CHECK failed, WindowsComputer::AddPageFileInfo: .\WindowsComputer.cpp(1680): false.
Details: 0xEBAB0013
Source: Norton Ghost
Solution: If not pagefile above is OK and scandisk and partitions seem fine, then could mean Net 2,0 framework has maybe become corrupted as Ghost 14 needs this add on MS Soft Library to access system resources to work.
Step 1) Scandisk all the drives and partitions, full scan for bad blocks you will need reboot for drives with windows system files on them.
scandisk is found by going into MY computer icon.,, right click on each drive letter and go properties then the TOOLS tab and then clicking SCANDISK in the lists.
Step 2) disable all virus protection (leave off - so if got option turn off until I manual turn off is best) Virus protection can prevent NET framework from installing properly its said.
Step 3) Download all the .NET installers ready to CLEANLY uninstall all .NET framework packages currently you could have all or just aew of these versions. typically 1.1 and 2 (and the service packs called SP1 or SP2 after the names) will be installed as alot of softwate uses them now days.
Versions 1.1 , 1.1 SP1, 2.0, 2.0 SP1, 2,0 SP2 , 3.0, 3.0 SP1, 3.0 SP2, 3.5, 3.5 SP1
Before uninstalling.. it would be advised if not already go them is to go to micrsoft download page and download the full installers for all versions and Services Packs. Although I think 3.5 SP1 will install version 2.0sp2 and 3.0sp2 as well but no 1.1 SP1
However ghost 14 to work just needs .NET 2.0 SP2 although should work with 2.0 and 2.0SP1 but recommend to have all the security fixes via the SP (service packs)
Step 4) Uninstall Ghost 14, reboot.. when back in.. run CCLEANER to make sure no registry leftovers.. Dont keep your existing backup files, best to recreate them and schediule again later onces Ghost 14 is running again!
Step 5) Uninstall the NETs. First download these 3 products will help remove them
>>> Microsoft Install Clean Up 2.0, msicuu2.exe (google it)
>>> dotnetfx clean up tool
http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=121918
>>> CCLEANER (a must have tool) www.ccleaner.com
Run first the cleanup tool nd say uninstall all .NET packages and reboots after its done
Next
Run MS clean up 2 tool and check if any framework in the list and click and uninstall via that. incase the first tool missed something
or didnt work as expected.
reboot. then lastly run CCLEANER and click registry TAB and scan for errors.. click FIX all and quit and reboot again.
hopefully not existance of NET frame work any version existed.. however some software might report errors until you reinstall them as expected!
now in order of frameworks 1.1 to 3.5 install each then their service packs version updates you downloaded.
reboot if asked with each.. untill all versions are back on your WINDOWS system.
Step 6) Reinstall Ghost 14, reboot
hopefully after its scanned drives now it should GO green tick!
also Acronis Disk Director Suite is great for checking partitions and managing them. It also calls scandisk or its own check disk tools
when right clicking on the Partition name. Most software will give 15 days free trial so source a copy and install.
GOOD LUCK!
